Her Story
About Engracia
I've been working in my field for almost three to four years now. I started my career working at a nonprofit organization as a resident monitor, where I helped people coming from jail and prison by counseling them to get better in society. Now I'm focusing on taxation and working as a tax preparer. I deal with clients almost every day, and some of them are really hard to deal with, but I always make the effort to get to know them, talk with them politely, and solve their situations and financial transactions. I'm currently pursuing my bachelor's degree in accounting and will graduate next spring. I'm also a published author - I wrote a book called 'The Wound of the Soul' that was published on Amazon two years ago. What inspired me to get into accounting was my auntie, who is a CPA. She told me about accounting, and I loved it because accounting is a huge field where you can work everywhere you want - in a hospital, anywhere. Accounting teaches you how to communicate with people, and you learn a lot about business and your own development.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Engracia
01What do you attribute your success to?
I'm a daring person. First of all, I trust God because I'm a Christian. If I trust God and then work hard to get what I want, and try to get help from people that I know will help me achieve my goals, I will go ahead and keep going until I get what I want. It's about having faith, working hard, and surrounding yourself with people who will support you in reaching your goals.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I received was from my professor of taxation, who always gave me advice to keep pushing me up to do better and to get better. Even though English is not my first language and I speak Portuguese, she still kept pushing me to get involved with other people. She encouraged me not to let language barriers hold me back and to keep moving forward in my career.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice is to not let people judge you because of your accent or language. Sometimes people think that because you have an accent, you cannot make it or that you're not intelligent or smart. But you just keep going, even when people see you like you don't know anything. Just keep pushing up, keep showing yourself that you can do it. Don't let people define your value or your capacity to do things. Keep pushing yourself to grow, and have faith in yourself. If you know that you want to become someone, and people tell you that you will not achieve it, you cannot listen to them. It's good to receive advice from people, but if you see that this advice will not make you grow, don't give up on what you are trying to do just because people are saying you are not enough to do it.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Right now, I'm trying to get an opportunity for an internship because I want to work with the government in auditing. When I first applied, they denied my application, but even with that, I still keep going. I talk with my professors, asking them if there is any internship that I could apply for, and I keep pushing myself, applying for other internships to get this opportunity. I haven't gotten the opportunity yet, but I know that I will get it. The biggest challenge is getting that first opportunity, but I'm persistent and keep applying.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me are integrity and staying true to yourself. We cannot do wrong things just because people are pushing us to do it. We should always keep our integrity - if you know that you cannot do certain things, and people are coming to tell you that you need to do it, you cannot do it just because of people. You need to always keep strong and not fall because of what people are saying about you. It's good to receive advice from people, but if you see that this advice will not make you grow, don't give up on what you are trying to do just because people say you're not enough.
