Her Story
About Eve
I've been in the QA field for 12 years, and it's been a journey with its ups and downs. My field is QA, the team that does the final testing after development is done. One of the challenges is that whenever there's financial challenges with the company, QA seems to be the first team that they feel can become obsolete because they can get their developers to test. So the challenge with QA is to try to move yourself up to more of a management-level position, because the role can become something based on the budget that they'll just take off. But other than that, it's really a great field to be in. My typical day looks like logging in and getting a sense of what are some of the showstopper issues or blocker issues that my team is dealing with, in order to be that person to remove the blockers or move things forward by bringing together the team that needs to help resolve the issue. When there's a defect or an issue in production or in a lower environment, I work to get that to move forward and be resolved, making sure that issue is no longer reproducible, and basically supporting my team and making sure that they're successful in completing their work by the end of the day. What I love most about my career is the opportunity to learn new technology. Being in software development and QA testing of new software, we tend to be on the cutting edge of any technological advancement, so right now AI being one of them. Being in the group that's actually developing and testing, you get access to the technology pretty quickly, so you're able to ramp up and become an expert on new technology very quickly in this role.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've ever received was to stay passionate, be passionate for what your role is, continue to grow and get involved, and just become a better version of yourself.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
It can be a male-dominated industry. Technology right now has become much more diverse, but sometimes moving up and progressing can seem challenging from a female perspective. So I would say continue to network and build relationships with everyone on your team, and just continue to shine and not be intimidated by the hierarchy.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The opportunities are there in this type of role and industry, but it's really about positioning yourself in your technical expertise to rise to the occasion, because technology changes quickly. So you have to do a lot of learning and upskilling to open up those doors and opportunities to advance. As for challenges, this is probably more specific to me as an African-American woman. The challenges with this belief that focusing on diversity is not necessarily having as much value as it should has, in a way, hindered or slowed down opportunities for opening up for me as an African American woman. But in spite of that, I still move forward with being the best version of myself and continue to train and upskill and add value to the team. That was one of the biggest challenges in the last couple years, but things are improving.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Definitely integrity and being willing to stand on your square when you have to make a point about something. Having that integrity and being able to speak to your convictions and be able to communicate your reasons for your convictions and your beliefs.
