Her Story

About Jennifer

What I love most about my work is that it's an honest job where I can wake up and believe in myself, knowing I'm doing something valuable. I love being able to partner with our vendors while advocating for our clients. Having been on the carrier side of things for 9 years in underwriting, I understand pricing and risk in a unique way. I believe in sustainable pricing and not undercutting, because at the end of the day, the carrier pays for it first, but the client pays for it second. I remember as an underwriter, I was always trying to make money for an insurance carrier, and that was tough because I kept thinking, is this the best deal for the client? Now I've got the client completely in my mind. It's always, is this the best deal for the client, given the options that are presented? I can go back and negotiate with carriers and say, hey, I think you need to put a little bit more weight on this experience, or I think you need to throw out that claim. I can have valuable conversations that they respond to and respect because I actually know what I'm talking about. The biggest thing is really being able to educate the client and making sure that they're always finding themselves in the best outcome possible for whatever it was that they needed, whether that's service, pricing, or anything else.

01What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I believe in the pay it forward philosophy. Because my boss invests so much time in me, I then turn that down, and everything that I learn from him, I apply downwards to my team, and I always try to mentor and guide and coach them. I think networking and finding mentor-mentee relationships is really important to me. The unique pressures that a woman faces working full-time is different than any man can ever realize. It's very different when my boss tells me to prioritize family over work, because prioritizing work over family for a man is very different than it is for me. Everything falls on mom. Mom is the default parent. Kid gets sick, mom gets called. Kid needs to go to the doctor, mom takes them. So there's a very different level of stress and pressure. I think there's an ability to network with those who have a high-demand career that are also full-time working moms, to leverage what each other know, what's working, what's not working, maybe shortcuts that they've been able to take in their personal, professional life that can make things easier, and just knowing that you're not in it alone.
