Ten minutes with Jennifer
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my compassion, determination, and the values that have shaped my life. Growing up, I watched my parents, James and Edna, generously support individuals and families in our community. Their example taught me the importance of serving others with kindness, humility, and consistency. As an adult, I was also inspired by my son’s grandmother, Lennix, whose commitment to helping others reinforced those same values. I have also been fortunate to learn from mentors, including Dr. Lashaundon Perkins of Renovating Lives, Mae Long, and Al Thomas of Apple Tree Transitions, whose guidance and encouragement have played a significant role in my personal and professional development. Together, their examples and support strengthened my passion for making a meaningful impact in the lives of others. I believe that staying true to my values, maintaining a strong work ethic, and approaching every opportunity with empathy and purpose have been the foundation of my personal and professional success.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've ever received was to not be afraid to push myself beyond my comfort zone and embrace new opportunities. Throughout my career, I've learned that some of the greatest growth comes from saying "yes" to opportunities that feel challenging. Whether it's taking on leadership responsibilities, speaking in front of others, or creating new opportunities to educate and advocate, stepping outside my comfort zone has helped me grow both personally and professionally.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering this industry is to develop a strong work ethic, lead with integrity, and always put the people you serve first. Documentation is an important part of the job, so it's essential to maintain accurate, timely, and honest records. Never document services that were not provided, because your integrity is one of your most valuable assets. I also encourage others to enter this profession because they have a genuine passion for helping people, not simply for financial reasons. The work can be challenging, but if you approach it with compassion, dedication, and a heart for service, it can also be one of the most rewarding careers you could choose.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenges and opportunities in my field center around ensuring that individuals have access to the mental health services and resources they need. One of the greatest challenges is ensuring that mental health services remain adequately funded and accessible, especially for underserved communities. In many rural areas, housing instability, transportation barriers, limited community resources, lack of reliable internet and broadband for telehealth, and food insecurity continue to make it difficult for individuals to get the support they need. At the same time, these challenges present opportunities to strengthen community partnerships, advocate for expanded services, improve access to care, and develop innovative solutions that help ensure mental health support is available to everyone, regardless of where they live or their circumstances.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are compassion, integrity, and believing in yourself. I believe in treating people with dignity, respecting their individual journeys, and encouraging them to recognize their own strengths. I also believe that embracing who you are is essential for both personal and professional growth. As someone with lived experience, I have a unique perspective that allows me to better relate to and support the individuals I serve. My experiences have strengthened my empathy, understanding, and commitment to creating meaningful connections while helping others recognize that recovery and growth are possible.
