Her Story
About Lauren
After graduating with a degree in architecture and interior design, I began my career in interior design and was hired as a store manager for tabletop products at a new company called HomePlace. My department quickly became number one in sales, which led to me being recruited to handle nationwide recruiting for that role. I traveled extensively and helped open 150 stores in about four years for this big box retail company that was similar to Williams-Sonoma but more accessible to the general public. After working as a store manager while raising my children, I got recruited to American Fidelity even though I wasn't looking for a job. A recruiter named Kim Burkeen called me, I went to interview, and I've been here ever since - 23 years now. When I started, we didn't really have a recruiting program for the field; it was kind of the wild wild west with every manager doing their own hiring. About a year after joining, the president of sales met with me to discuss quality hiring issues, and out of that conversation, we developed my position and started building a structured recruiting program. I've watched our field staff grow from 200 to nearly 450 representatives. My boss retired last year after working together for many years, so it's been a transitional period, but I still love what I do.

01What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I think the biggest challenge for us is the longevity piece - finding people that have the patience to stay and really take the time to learn the job and get good at it. Everyone comes to us with great experience and sales awards, but I think it's nice that we have that longevity and tenure to give them. Probably since COVID, people don't want to travel as much, which has been a challenge for our field sales roles. But the most satisfying part for me is just seeing people succeed. I truly believe that this role is going to be the career of your lifetime, and that's our mentality - we want it to be a great career where they're going to make the money to support their family, send their kids to the college they want to send them to, and help our teachers. It's really all about helping them and finding candidates that are going to be a good fit with the manager and the team, and stay with us forever.
