In her current role as Chief of Staff and Program Analyst at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), she serves as a trusted advisor to executive clinical leadership. She leads complex cross-functional initiatives, manages multimillion-dollar procurement and vendor relationships, supports compliance and quality assurance activities, and delivers actionable, data-driven analyses to inform strategic decision-making. She plays a key role in onboarding, resource coordination, and executive operations, while championing process improvement, management, and team development efforts to strengthen organizational performance.

Ms. Asrat previously built a strong foundation in healthcare and clinical operations. As a Patient Care Coordinator at Medical Science & Computing, she optimized scheduling systems and clinic workflows for specialty services, enhancing provider access, patient flow, and adherence to care plans. In her role as Patient Experience Coordinator at MedStar Montgomery Medical Center, she led patient experience and risk management initiatives, analyzed satisfaction metrics, resolved complex concerns, coordinated culturally responsive care, and provided data-driven insights to support quality and policy improvements.

Earlier in her career, as an Office Operational Coordinator at Aquila Recovery, she managed high-volume outpatient operations, streamlined workflows, trained staff, and supported regulatory compliance with The Joint Commission (JCAHO), assisting both the CEO and Clinical Director during audits. She also contributed directly to patient care as a Certified Nursing Assistant and Administrative Assistant in private practice and hospital settings. Additionally, she gained foundational experience in regulatory compliance, policy analysis, and program management through a public health internship with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success first and foremost to my family, whose sacrifices, guidance, and unwavering belief in me have shaped every chapter of my life. My parents made the extraordinary and courageous decision to immigrate from Ethiopia when I was just three years old, leaving behind familiarity, extended family, and established lives in pursuit of greater opportunity and a brighter future for their children. Their leap of faith was not simply a relocation—it was an act of profound love, resilience, and vision.

My father embodied perseverance and quiet strength. Through his work ethic and steadfast determination, he demonstrated what it means to remain disciplined in the face of adversity. He taught me that integrity is non-negotiable, that consistency builds character, and that true leadership begins with responsibility. His example instilled in me the courage to set ambitious goals and the resilience to pursue them, even when the path forward feels uncertain.

My mother has been the emotional anchor and guiding light of our family. Her sacrifices were often unseen but immeasurable—balancing countless responsibilities while ensuring that her children never lacked support, encouragement, or belief in their potential. She modeled compassion, humility, and faith, teaching me that strength can be gentle and that perseverance can coexist with grace. From her, I learned empathy, patience, and the importance of uplifting others as we rise.

Together, my parents created a foundation rooted in sacrifice, discipline, education, and unwavering love. Every milestone I have achieved stands on the groundwork they laid through courage and selflessness.

I am also deeply grateful for my husband, whose steady partnership, encouragement, and belief in my purpose have allowed me to pursue my professional aspirations with confidence and balance. His support has been instrumental in helping me navigate the demands of leadership while remaining grounded in what matters most.

My brother has served as both mentor and role model, inspiring me through his dedication, intellectual curiosity, and perseverance. His example continually challenges me to grow, to think boldly, and to strive for excellence.

My aunt has likewise been a source of wisdom, encouragement, and steadfast support. Her guidance and affirmation throughout pivotal moments in my life have strengthened my confidence and reinforced the importance of family unity and shared success.

Every accomplishment I have reached is a reflection of the sacrifices my parents made, the partnership my husband provides, the mentorship of my brother, and the encouragement of my aunt. Their collective love, belief, and investment in my growth have been the driving force behind my journey, and I carry their lessons with me in every professional and personal endeavor.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received is inspired by Maya Angelou’s words: “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” This principle has profoundly shaped my approach to healthcare operations, clinical leadership, and team management. While technical expertise, policy knowledge, and operational skills are critical, the way we engage with others—patients, colleagues, and teams—defines our lasting impact.

In my work supporting executive clinical leadership and cross-functional initiatives, I prioritize empathy, respect, and clear communication. Whether assisting patients navigating complex healthcare journeys, collaborating with research and clinical teams, or guiding staff through change management and process improvements, I focus on creating environments where people feel heard, valued, and supported. This approach not only fosters trust and strengthens relationships but also drives better outcomes—empowering individuals and teams to perform at their best.

For me, leadership is not measured solely by results or efficiencies, but by the ability to cultivate meaningful connections and positively influence the experiences of everyone I work with. Centering how people feel in every interaction is the cornerstone of effective leadership and, ultimately, the measure of true professional success.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the healthcare and public health field is to pursue your work with passion, curiosity, and confidence. Build a strong foundation of skills, but never underestimate the power of empathy, communication, and collaboration—these qualities are just as critical as technical expertise. Seek mentors and role models who inspire you, and don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself and your ideas. Remember that your perspective, your voice, and your dedication matter, and the impact you make on patients, colleagues, and communities can be profound. Most importantly, stay true to your values and let your purpose guide your career decisions.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges is managing constant change—whether it’s new technology, evolving expectations, or limited resources—while still delivering quality results. At the same time, these challenges are opportunities to grow, innovate, and make a meaningful impact. Those who can adapt, collaborate, and find creative solutions are best positioned to turn challenges into progress.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that guide both my professional and personal life—integrity, empathy, and perseverance—are the foundation of how I approach every aspect of my work. Integrity ensures that each decision and initiative is grounded in honesty, accountability, and a commitment to doing what is right, even in complex or high-stakes situations. Empathy allows me to connect deeply with patients navigating challenging healthcare journeys, support colleagues across clinical and research teams, and foster trusting relationships that enable collaboration and meaningful impact. Perseverance drives me to overcome obstacles, stay focused on strategic goals, and continuously learn and grow in dynamic healthcare and organizational environments.
