Her Story

About Margot

I've been in biotech and pharma technology for 18 years. I always had a passion for sciences and actually started out applying to veterinary school. I took a program course to make some money while I was applying to vet school so I could help pay for it, and I got sidetracked by the technology and never went back. My bachelor's degree is in philosophy, but I took a lot of biology and chemistry classes because I wanted to do veterinary medicine. Most of the mentors I found were actually not in my field, but were the people doing the science - chemists in the labs, biologists in the labs, people who are really passionate about the science. I had to learn through their language so I could find the technology solutions that would help them. It was really the community that the technology was serving, rather than the technology itself. What drives me is really the potential to help people. I used to be a part of PerkinElmer, and I always appreciated their tagline, For the Better. I find sciences in every field, it's for the better - cleaner energy, greener things, better patient care, faster drug development for rare diseases. All of these are things that I connect with. My most notable achievement was scaling a professional services team of about 5 people to an over 65-person services team delivering over 25 products, and transforming that entire team from an on-premise services delivery to a cloud-native delivery in less than 4 years.

Ten minutes with Margot

01What do you attribute your success to?

The biggest attribute to my success is really being engaged, raising my hand, pick me, pick me. Let me ask questions with genuine interest and enthusiasm and curiosity to learn. I think being very curious and proactive is absolutely a pillar of succeeding in this industry.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice is really about following what lights you up and leveraging your strengths and adopting being curious and adopting a passion for continuous improvement. Always ask, you know, what can we do better? Where should we change?

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Be very curious and proactive. Try all the technology for yourself. Dig deep in the things that you're interested in. There's so many opportunities now with open source technology that you don't need to wait for formal training or any of that, just follow your interests and get hands-on with the things you want to do.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I think there's a recent upsurge of women in the industry, but a lot of companies tend to still have an executive presence that's primarily male. What I'm finding is at this level right now, people have overcome the diversity problem, and they're starting to focus more on practical matters, as in, what have you done, rather than who are you. So there are definitely opportunities.
