Her Story

About Melissa

Melissa Palmer is a first-generation college student who navigated her education largely without direct parental guidance, though she was deeply influenced by her family’s strong belief in the value of education. She pursued a degree in International Studies, drawn to global cultures and international experiences, but graduated without a clear understanding of how to translate her interests into a defined career path. Like many in similar circumstances, she entered the workforce with potential and ambition, but limited direction.

After experiencing a first job that felt misaligned and unfulfilling, Melissa took a proactive approach to understanding her options and began researching graduate programs that could help her build a clearer professional path. This led her to Miami University in Ohio, where she earned a graduate degree in College Student Personnel with a focus on career development and international student support. Her graduate experience was transformative, helping her realize that career clarity is not accidental, but something that can be developed through intentional reflection, structure, and guidance.

Today, Melissa Palmer is a career development professional and executive coach who helps high-achieving individuals create alignment between their strengths, values, and career paths. She draws on her belief that sensitivity is a powerful asset, enabling her to help clients better understand themselves and articulate their unique value. Through her work, she supports professionals in identifying their strengths, clarifying their direction, and building intentional strategies that lead to greater confidence, purpose, and career fulfillment.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Melissa

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to continual retooling and lifelong learning, strong mentors who have guided me throughout my career, and my willingness to embrace sensitivity as a professional strength rather than a limitation. I also believe in doing the same reflective and alignment work that I ask of my clients, which keeps me grounded, intentional, and consistent in my growth.

02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in my field right now is a rapidly shifting job market shaped by generational differences in values, expectations, and ways of working. There are also ongoing inequities in access to opportunity, particularly when it comes to networks and alumni connections that not everyone has. At the same time, I see a strong opportunity to help professionals navigate today’s realities while also working to create more equitable pathways for individuals who do not have traditional access to networks.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that are most important to me in my work and personal life are education, inclusion, equity, and service to community. I also prioritize maintaining a sustainable pace in my work so I can avoid burnout and remain effective over the long term. Faith is another guiding value that helps ground my decisions and how I show up in both my professional and personal life.
