Her Story

About Samantha

I've been in the recruitment field for almost 12 years now, and it all started with a paid internship during college at an RPO. I never looked back after that experience. Currently, I work as a talent advisor, which is essentially a recruiter role, focusing primarily on healthcare and construction industries. It's a funny combo, but it works. I help organizations of all sizes by acting as an extension of their HR departments, handling everything from initial phone screens and reference checks to setting up interviews and walking candidates through the offer process. My journey has taken me through some incredible experiences, including working on crisis staffing, vaccination projects, and migrant healthcare initiatives during the pandemic when I was based out of New York City. That was a chaotic but incredibly fulfilling time, where I met amazing nurses from all over the country who threw themselves into impossible situations. I've been with my current employer since January 2025, but I actually worked here before from around 2016 to 2019. My bosses recruited me fresh out of college, and when I got laid off from my previous position, they reached out with perfect timing. I'm grateful to be back working with people I genuinely enjoy and respect.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Someone told me recently, and it's so true: you can't take the human out of human resources. That really resonated with me, especially in an age where AI is becoming so involved in our industry and there have been mass layoffs in talent acquisition and recruiting. I've unfortunately been a part of those layoffs myself. But that advice reminds me that it's those personal connections that matter most. You have to understand how AI can help you and support you and make your life easier, but then really focus on building those relationships. That's what I think is most important currently, especially as things keep changing.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

The one thing that I feel has helped me most working in recruiting and account management is staying very organized, because you're having to manage many different clients and relationships with candidates. I would also just say, be yourself. Make it not so transactional, and make it more personal. Get to know the people that you're placing, because in the long run, if it's a contract position and it ends after three months, they're going to want to continue working with you over another recruiter or working for another agency because they have that personal relationship with you. Really take the time to make it more humanized. With AI becoming so involved in our industry, and with all the mass layoffs in talent acquisition and recruiting that have happened, you can't take the human out of human resources. Those personal connections are what will set you apart. Learn how AI can help you and support you and make your life easier, and then just really focus on building those relationships. That's what I think is most important currently.
