What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to not giving up and being personable. I'm teachable - that's another thing. If I'm doing it wrong or you think I'm doing it wrong, I listen. You've gotta be coachable, even if you've done it one way for 15, 20 years. If they want you to do it a different way, I adapt. So I guess adaptability and dedication and hard work. You never gotta give up, and don't be set in your ways. I've been doing things a certain way for a long time, and I've had people who have only been doing it for like 3 years come up, and they're like, 'Well, I do it this way,' and I'm like, 'You know, that makes more sense.' I've only been taught to do it this way, but I like your way better, because it's either stronger, better, or quicker. I really do think that my customer service has helped get me where I'm at - it's the relationships that I've built. I cannot stress that enough.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Mentors and family taught me to be headstrong and never give up. Overcoming challenges and staying committed, even when things get tough, has been essential to my career growth.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Believe in themselves. Don't ever quit. When things get hard, keep going, because you're not gonna make it anywhere and be successful if you give up every time. You've gotta keep going. And be friendly. Make friends, build relationships. That's the biggest thing in sales - building the relationship, because if you're somebody they trust, they're gonna keep coming back to you. To me, the relationship is more important than actually having their business. There's people out there that don't use my products, and I still go in there, and I'm building that relationship. And maybe one day, when they're tired of their POS system, they're gonna be like, 'You know, Shaylin comes in here all the time. Let's do this.' I also like honesty and transparency. The best advice is build the relationships, and don't ever give up. There's been times where I don't know if they were having a bad day, but I've been yelled at and screamed at, and it just pushes me to do better. I'm always trying to improve myself, because you can always be a better person and help somebody else. Pretty much everything you do, and how you act outside of work matters, too. Especially if you're wearing a company's hat, you represent them the right way. Even if I'm not working for them, I'm representing them when I wear their stuff, and I want them to be proud of who I am representing.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Honesty, transparency, relationship-building, persistence, adaptability, and serving others through volunteerism.
