Her Story

About Alisha

I've been in philanthropy for about 2 years now, working dually in the community for WellCare of North Carolina, a Medicaid company, and as an athlete consultant through House of Philanthropy. My background in Medicaid and working with nonprofits showed me the care gaps that exist, and my love for sports in the philanthropic space made me realize that athletes can make big changes in the community with small investments. I work with guys across the league from the Bears, Titans, Falcons, and Colts, building out their programming for their foundation and helping them understand their purpose off the field. I help athletes realize that they're bigger than their jersey, bigger than what they're doing on the field or court, and that they can make true community impact from their hometown or in the city their team is in. I work predominantly with guys in the NFL, but I also work with high school athletes going through the college pipeline and college guys declaring for the draft. What makes me so proud of the work I'm doing is that every time we leave a community, we leave it better than we found it. A big passion of mine is Black maternal health and making sure that moms and kids have the resources they need.

Ten minutes with Alisha

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would say my support system. I am grateful every day for the people that I have around me, from my family to also the colleagues and the network that I've built. I'm definitely keen on, I would not be who I am without the people that God's placed in my life.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

To take the risk. I think if I would have taken more risks earlier, when I had less responsibility, and I know I still have a long way to go before responsibilities truly hit me, I just wish I would have taken them sooner, betted on myself more while I was in college, spoke up a little bit more about ideas that I had and things of that nature. So I would say my advice is always to bet on yourself and take that risk before any responsibilities hit.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Making true community impact with a story to go along with it. I really enjoy that no matter where I am in the community, we're driving impact and not just kind of showing up to put a name to something or to put a logo on something. We're there for the community, we show up, we make it a sustainable event, something that can be replicated or done again. What makes me so proud of the work that I'm doing is that every time we leave a community, we leave it better than we found it. Finding that purpose, no matter what walk of life you are, is so important.
