Her Story
About Anika
I started my journey at Penn State in 2019, where I studied architectural engineering with a focus on construction management. My education was comprehensive, covering all aspects of engineering including structural, mechanical, electrical, lighting, and construction management. In 2023, I secured an internship with Power Design Inc. that lasted three months, and at the end of that internship, I was offered a full-time career. After graduating in 2024, I returned to Power Design and started as a project engineer. Power Design has a unique rotation program where project engineers rotate every six months through different departments for the first two years to learn the backgrounds and the why behind everything we do. When my graduating class of 17 project engineers got drafted to our permanent teams this January, I was the number one pick, which was a really big deal, especially as a woman in this male-dominated industry. I was then promoted to assistant project manager and placed on a permanent team. Currently, I'm working on a resort project under NDA, focusing on electrical work as part of our multi-trade contracting services that include mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and systems like energy, low voltage, and fire alarms. Being recognized during Women in Construction Week in March in front of 500 women at our company was an incredible honor, and the future looks pretty bright from here.

Ten minutes with Anika
01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
My superintendent, Eddy Zaldivar, has been a key mentor on my project management team. He's mentored me and given me advice on how to succeed, especially as a woman on the team right now. He's helped me understand what advantages I have and has been pushing me to success. Having someone like him who advocates for me has been instrumental in my professional growth.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would say advocate for yourself. It's important to make those connections early on in your career and have people that will advocate for you, even when you're not in the room. Don't be discouraged by your gender or anything like that. Everyone has their own skill set, everyone learns and accomplishes things in their own time. Just push through the barriers and try your best.
03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Reaching other people and inspiring them is one of the most important things to me. I think it's important to help support and inspire the next generation, or people that are already set in their careers but want to feel that inspiration or feel stuck. You never know who you can reach and who gets to see your story and gets that inspiration that they really needed. Giving back to the community is also very important to me, whether through building homes for families that need it, volunteering with animals, or supporting causes like the American Heart Association and breast cancer awareness, which is personally meaningful because my mom had breast cancer.
