Her Story

About Brittney

I've been in property management for 19 years, starting as a leasing consultant in Birmingham, Alabama after my Nextel stores went under. I stayed in leasing for 6 years because I loved it so much before moving into management. My main area of expertise is on the management side, particularly creating teams, training, and making people ready for the next step in their role. I've promoted lots of people within the company, and many people I've worked with in the past have followed me to new companies and new roles. I think prepping people for a new role and promoting people is definitely something I excel at. I've been a single mom almost my entire career in multifamily, which pushed me to work harder and pursue more. I was able to raise my kids through the hard times, and now they're adults and I have my first grandbaby. About 10 years ago, I moved to Nashville where I continue working in the multifamily industry.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've ever received is to work smarter, not harder. This has really guided how I approach my work and helped me be more effective in what I do.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say it's not gonna be easy, but it's gonna be worth it. You always show up, and you always try your best. That's what will get you through and help you succeed.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

There's so much new development happening right now, which creates a lot of opportunities. But there's a lack of good employees, and I've had a hard time with temp agencies. I really think we should put something into place that trains people specifically for this industry, because I think it's just gonna continue to grow. With all the new development and all the new positions coming available, it's hard keeping everybody staffed and training all the new people. Finding good people has been really tough, and I think it's a big issue in our field.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I would definitely say honesty and loyalty. I mean, in business and in personal life in general, I think life's about getting what you give. What you put in, you get the same thing back out of it. So I think when you're honest and you're loyal to the people that you work with and the people closest to you, that definitely helps you along the way.
