Her Story

About Coach

My professional journey has been one where the work truly chose me rather than the other way around. For the past 4 years, I've served as Chief Victim Witness Coordinator at our DA's office, a role I didn't even know existed until our current elected DA asked me to come work for her if she won the election. In this position, I help victims and survivors of violent crimes navigate the criminal court process - all the legal jargon, the court process itself - while they're also trying to navigate their grief from traumatic experiences. My day-to-day involves communicating with victims and survivors, connecting them to resources including counseling, helping remove them from unsafe residences, and being that liaison between the attorneys and them. I'm their safe space when they have breakdowns, like when we're sitting in court during a trial and they see something or get done testifying and it just breaks them. Alongside this work, I've been a life coach, speaker, and grief counselor for 5 years. This path was birthed after losing my dad in 2014 and finding myself in a space of high-functioning depression. After getting in contact with a grief counselor and experiencing how beneficial it was, I knew I wanted to share that with other people. I meet people where they are, allow them to tell me what they're looking for and what their goals are, then we curate an action plan. But before we can get to the action, we dig up the root causes - how did we get here? We identify that, work towards shedding limiting beliefs, and then work towards those goals with practical steps. I work with clients for 6 weeks in my signature program, 2 hours a week, with homework to help them really engage and practicalize what we talk about. After the 6 weeks, we have follow-up sessions monthly for about 3 months, and then it's as needed based on what they desire and what chapter of life they're in.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I have an amazing support system that keeps me grounded. My husband is amazing, my family, my friends - I always say my girlfriends are the best in the world. Each part of my support system, whether it's my husband, my mom and siblings, or my girlfriends, they allow me to vent when I need to, they allow me to just be when I need to be. No one forces anything from me, no one is demanding of me because they know the work that I do, but they also check on me and make sure I'm taking care of me when I don't remember to take care of myself. That looks like going out to eat, traveling (we travel a lot), girls' night in or girls' night out. I also watch a lot of Golden Girls - they're on my TV every night before I go to sleep, at least two episodes, and I'm able to sleep laughing. Most importantly, I stand on my faith, keeping that first and foremost, always knowing that God gives me the strength to do the work that I do. It's not just work, it's a calling for me, and I lean on the strength that God gives me to move daily in this space that I'm in.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Just do it. Not to sound like Nike, but just do it. One of the things that I would definitely say to a young lady is you already have what you need - it's in there, it's in you already, you just have to tap into it. You don't have to wait until you're quote 'ready' because ready is not a thing in my opinion. We're forever growing, we're forever learning, we're forever evolving, and if you wait till you get ready, you'll never do anything. So I would just say do it from where you are and continue to build and grow, and you move in that confidence, and it becomes a reality because you are walking in it.
