Her Story
About Emma
I have been an Admissions Advisor at Herzing University for almost two years, and it's been an incredibly fulfilling journey. My first position after graduation was at Boise Rescue Mission, a nonprofit serving the homeless community in the greater Boise area, and then I worked in the legal department for Scandinavian Designs, a furniture company, before finding my way back to nonprofit work at Herzing. I've always been interested in nonprofit and volunteer work - I did a lot of mission trips in high school and volunteered throughout college. One of the biggest things I always came back to in my career when thinking about what I really wanted to do was just being a light in someone's day and helping people, and that's what I get to do every day now: help people into their career and into their education. I studied public relations, and what I loved about that field was the personal connection aspect, and now at Herzing, every day looks a little bit different with a similar routine where I'm learning people's stories and getting to combine administrative work with personal connections. My main area of expertise is being able to build rapport and strong communication with students. In December, we had our annual conference and I was awarded for most referrals - students recommending their friends or coworkers to have me as their advisor. That was really comforting and warmed my heart that students I had worked with, whether for a short period of time or for months, trusted me with someone in their circle. I'm currently pursuing my MBA in Business Administration, which allows me to apply the personal and relational side of my position into more strategic, long-term planning, and that's what I've most enjoyed about the program.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
It's cliche, but I would say be yourself. It's been such a joy to be able to - you know, growing up, being the girl who was always talking and always energetic - it's now really nice to be in a field that that is what is needed, to be able to talk to a lot of students, and be high energy, and be yourself. Being anyone but myself, I think, would have not allowed me to, one, enjoy the job as much as I do, and continue to want more. I also wanted to respond to this opportunity to encourage young women that you don't have to wait until you're 10 years into your career to be proud of what you've done. I tend to be the youngest in the room, and at first, that was a little intimidating, but now I'm like, okay, that's probably a good thing. So just encouraging - yeah, less of just to put me on a pedestal, but hopefully encourage other young women starting in the field, starting in any of their fields.
