Joy R. Brown
Joy Brown is a dedicated and accomplished educator serving within Pitt County Schools, where she works as a third-grade teacher committed to fostering academic growth, confidence, and lifelong learning in young students. She is recognized for her student-centered approach to instruction, creating a structured yet nurturing classroom environment that supports both academic achievement and personal development. Her work reflects a deep commitment to helping students build strong foundational skills while also encouraging curiosity, resilience, and a love of learning.
Joy’s path into education is rooted in a significant and inspiring career transition. With a professional background in human resources, she previously worked in the finance department within Pitt County Schools, where she gained valuable experience in organizational operations, staff support, and district-level collaboration. During her tenure, the Superintendent of Human Resources recognized her potential and encouraged her to pursue a career in teaching. Although she initially questioned her readiness, she was motivated to apply and was quickly invited for an interview. Her qualifications, professionalism, and passion for working with people led to a same-day job offer from school leadership, marking the beginning of her teaching career in September 2022. She describes this transition as a defining moment that aligned her long-standing aspiration to become an educator with her professional purpose.
In addition to her contributions in the classroom, Joy Brown is an emerging creative voice and storyteller. She is actively engaged in writing and content creation, including developing her third play with aspirations for production in 2027. She is also in the process of completing her third book and is preparing to launch a podcast that reflects her commitment to education, empowerment, and meaningful dialogue. One of her most personal literary projects is a children’s book titled My Dad, My First Hero, which draws from her lived experience and highlights the importance of positive father figures in a child’s life. Through her work as both an educator and creator, Joy remains dedicated to inspiring others, uplifting communities, and making a lasting impact through education, storytelling, and advocacy.

What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to God and my faith. I was raised by a Christian mom, and we were consistently in church every week, and that is just part of who I am. I'm also an evangelist, and I have such a passion and a heart for people, especially children. God is my driving force. He is the reason why I have a passion to do what I do, and to go where I go, and to help those that are in need.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
The advice I would give young women is to live your dream. Whatever passion, whatever desire that you have, walk it out. It may look different for each person, but never allow fear to cause you not to step into what you know deep down inside that you're called to be. Fear is one of the great things that will hinder people, not only women, but all people, from excelling and doing what they have been called to do in the earth, their calling, their passion. I would tell my younger self, and also I would tell women to step out. If you have a desire to do it, just step out and do it. Just jump. Jump and do it. And knowing that when you're called to it, you are equipped to withstand anything that comes your way.
