Her Story
About Julia
I started my professional journey working in restaurants, which gave me really solid transferable skills in communication with others, whether co-workers or client-facing communication. I started college in 2018, but felt that at the time I just wasn't taking it seriously and didn't really want to waste a lot of money, so I took some time off and barista'd for a while. I went back to college in 2024 and have worked through every summer, taking full-time classes, really trying to get on the fast track to graduating, and it's finally happening soon in May. About 6 months ago, I started an internship through school at Unum in client success, and it has been really amazing. It's taught me so much about just how the corporate world works and made me discover that I have a liking for it and kind of more of a passion for that side of the world. I'm also doing business management for Bostic's Cabinet Painting, which my husband owns. We've had the company since last November. He does all the labor-intensive things like the actual painting, and I'm behind the scenes contacting customers, working up spreadsheets, finances for him, and sometimes therapy. We work very well together, which is nice. Landing the internship has definitely been very meaningful to me and very exciting. To be able to go back and be very serious about college and then kind of see that unfold in positive ways has been super meaningful to me.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Learn Excel. I would say, first and foremost, get really good at Excel. I learned everything I know from an internship, so I would definitely advise someone to look for opportunities like that, just to kind of learn the ins and outs of how to run a business and cover all your bases, and get everything set up so that it would run smoothly.
02What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I learned a lot from both of my grandmothers, who were both teachers. A lot of the things that they instilled in me have applied to my professional growth. One thing both of them have always been really big on is to always be looking for opportunities to learn more, as well as just kind of standing up for myself and never thinking I can't do something, you know, always going for it.
