Her Story
About LaToyia
I've been in the corporate media field for a little over a year as corporate counsel, but my legal career spans much longer. I started out with a firm that specialized in insurance defense, then shifted to the U.S. Attorney's Office where I spent almost 10 years working in federal law and prosecution. Throughout my career, I've demonstrated the flexibility of being able to transfer within different subject matters. In my current role, I oversee FCC compliance, handle matters regarding data privacy and security, manage human resource matters, and handle donor engagement legal matters. I also handle our intellectual property and trademark matters for the ministry. I've had countless trainings throughout my career, especially with the Department of Justice, including advocacy trainings, trainings involving trademarks, and extensive trainings regarding data privacy with emphasis on AI development. When I became an ordained minister in 2024, I wanted to use my legal skills and expertise to further advance the Kingdom of God. I wanted my career to align with my faith, and I prayed about it. The opportunity presented itself, and it seemed as if it was answered prayers. Every step of the way during the interview process, I knew that this was something bigger than me, that this was God's doing. A year later, I'm happy, and it's a great fit, especially for the season I am in my career as well as my spiritual growth.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with LaToyia
01What do you attribute your success to?
I give all glory to God. I was raised by a single mother who raised 5 girls on her own. I was born in an impoverished area in rural Mississippi with not many opportunities at all. But I had a passion, as far back as I can remember, to be a lawyer. I don't know where that passion came from at such a young age. I have to attribute it to God and me aligning with the purpose that He had for me, even at a young age. Once I continued on that path, I didn't have a lot of help that some of my peers had, but I knew that I was aligned with what God wanted me to do, and that He was going to help me along the way, and He did. Whenever I talk about my career and my success, I can't talk about it without talking about God and giving God the glory, because I know I wouldn't be where I am if God hadn't been an instrumental part of my life.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Find a mentor, and be a mentor. I've had wonderful mentors throughout college, as well as law school, and currently in my career. These people have poured into me at different phases of my life.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Always seek out opportunities to grow. Never look at anything as a hindrance or a challenge. Just see it as this is an opportunity for me to grow in my experience and my knowledge and my skills.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Any job has its challenges. The biggest challenge for me personally is that I came from a background working for the government for over a decade, and coming here where it's more corporate, for me, that has been one of the biggest adjustments. I wouldn't say challenges, but the biggest adjustments.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Loyalty, I would say, is the biggest one. Communication, effective communication. And compassion.
