Her Story

About Madison

I started my accounting career early, as a senior in high school when I had an internship doing taxes, accounts payable, and accounts receivable. I had all my credits done beforehand because I was taking college classes during school, so I got to get a little bit of experience in my field before even going to college. I went to Iowa State for a year, getting my hands dirty with all things accounting and business school. Then I transferred back to Omaha to pursue my dream of giving back to the youth, and I helped jumpstart a volleyball club that's a non-profit here in Omaha. While doing that, I also had an internship through a company that I was working remotely for, and I gained a ton of experience through them. They trusted me with a lot of different things, and I helped create better processes for them that they still use now even though I don't work there anymore. After my internship was up with my graduation in December, I got a job at Kiewit, which is a pretty big company here in Omaha, and I work in audit. I've been conducting a couple different audits through the company. I really feel like I got a ton of my experience and groundwork through my education and my internship years. I learned a lot when I was young, which was super helpful and helped me land a good career path for myself.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would say the way I was raised, but also some of the coaches that I've had the privilege to work with or that have coached me. I've really realized how the way that they coached me and the things that they wanted me to do as an athlete have shaped me into a professional in the business world. My parents have helped shape me and make me a hard worker and have instilled that mindset in me of facing obstacles as opportunities and tapping into your connections. I would say that them together have helped pave that for me.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say to face obstacles as opportunities. The more obstacles you face, the more doors are gonna open up, right? So really tap into your connections and face those obstacles as opportunities to grow and get better at what you do, and even what you might not know that you can do yet. Take out those opportunities and capitalize on that for sure.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I would say being open-minded and being willing to change. Facing obstacles as opportunities is a super big thing for me, so I think that contributes into my values of having an open mind and being willing to listen to other people and what they might have to say. That's super important to me.
