Her Story

About Maria

I started my journalism career as an intern at Bloomberg Television in New York, then was hired as a contractor immediately after graduation. After a few months in New York, I moved back to Ohio to continue producing at a local news station there, and that led me to my current city in Charlotte, North Carolina. I always wanted to be a storyteller - I thought for the longest time I wanted to just be a filmmaker and do it that way, but I found a passion with local news. Being a news producer gave me the fuel to tell different types of stories, from hard-hitting breaking news like shootings and COVID coverage to more positive community stories. I've always had that knack for wanting to tell stories and seeing how I can take a press release and elevate it and make it visual. In my current role as a newsletter editor for 6AM City in Charlotte, I tell positive local stories, things that impact our community, and really show pride in our city. I'm fortunate that I can still tell stories, meet influential people in the community, and explain why people should know about this latest coffee shop or this entrepreneur - that really fuels me and excites me. I think I've always wanted to tell stories, even as a kid I was influenced early on with film and television, and any way I can take that storytelling and elevate it in anything I do is kind of my goal.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to honestly, the people that have invested in me - my mentors and supervisors. Without them, I don't know that I would be able to ask for help professionally or have been comfortable to do so. One of my mentors kept telling me almost daily not to stress over things I can't control, because we had a long stint of breaking news things and different changes late in the day, and I would just get so frustrated. Now, if something happens and I have to pivot, I take it head on and I'm excited, but I wasn't always in my career excited for that. I also attribute my success to my partner, my wife - she is amazing and is my biggest cheerleader. She's kind of like my rock when I feel unstable, if I ever do. But my mentors, absolutely.
