Her Story

About Melissa

I've been working in healthcare IT for 14 years now, and I'm going on 12 years with Orion Health this December. After finishing my associate degree in Network Systems Administration at ITT in 2013, I started at a Network Operations Center, which opened up great opportunities for me. I was referred to Orion through the recruiter at ITT, and I started on the Service Desk supporting our U.S. clients, making sure messages were flowing through the system. I worked nights in the beginning, then moved to days, and spent about 9 or 10 years in the service desk. I worked my way up to a lead position, where I was overseeing the service desk and training all the new employees coming in. A year after being promoted to lead, I was promoted to my current role as Service Operations Analyst. In this position, I do much more than the title suggests. I have one employee under me who handles change management, and I oversee the entire change management process per ITIL standards. I also manage problem management, continuous improvement, and serve as a liaison with our service managers, making sure any client escalations are addressed properly. On top of that, I handle incident management, so when one of our systems goes down, I get everybody together, we find out what happened, fix the issue, and make sure all communications go out to the executives and clients. I really pride myself on my documentation, my runbooks and knowledge bases, and the training I provide. Recently, one of my employees told me that I 'set a great example of how junior employees should be supported' and that I gave her 'the kind of support that really made a difference,' which means the world to me. I don't jump around to different companies. I like to stay where I'm at, and I plan to continue moving up within Orion and eventually retire here.

Ten minutes with Melissa

01What do you attribute your success to?

I'd have to go back to what I was taught ethically by my parents. My mom ran a business and my dad worked for her sometimes, and he was also a truck driver, so I got my business ethics from them. Things like always being on time, actually being half an hour early. But beyond that, it's really about doing what you have to do when you have to do it without being told to do it. That's what's gotten me to where I'm at today with Orion. We would lose our team leads or our bosses for the service desk, and rather than letting things drop off, it was always 'what do you need me to do?' I made sure things were going right, working all shifts depending on the availability. I'm a total team player, and that initiative and willingness to step up to the plate is what has made the difference in my career.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Don't give up. As long as you can get your foot in the door as an intern or in the service desk, there's always room to move up within the company if you're good at what you do.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

First and foremost is always family. I practice what I preach. If anything happens with my employees' families and they need to go, I tell them to go and I'll figure it out. I also really value my integrity. I feel that my integrity is good, and it's something I stand by. It means doing what I say I'm going to do and standing by my word, so that my team can rely on me and know they can count on me. That's what's important, especially to people who are dependent upon me.
