Her Story

About Michelle

I actually went to college for fashion and ended up on a wedding shoot for a magazine I was working with, and just fell in love with weddings. That started me in the field of weddings and social events. I started my own business and did that for about 12 years, which I really enjoyed. Then I was looking for a more 9-to-5ish corporate event role and found that with the John Maxwell Leadership Center. I built out their system for doing events there and was there for about eight and a half years. Now I'm doing less events since I was brought on at Gas South District to build out our community relations program, which launched in March. I'm a natural builder of things, so I look forward to opportunities to continue building out this program so we have a larger footprint in this community. I still occasionally pick and choose events, like I've taken two destination weddings since then.

Ten minutes with Michelle

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would really say discernment. I've always been pretty good about discerning what's good for me, what's not good for me, and really stepping out and advocating for myself and advocating for my career. That ability to know what aligns with my path and having the courage to speak up for what I need has been key to my success.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I think to be open-hearted and open-handed, and be flexible as you're building out programs. But also, our world is kind of starving for authenticity right now, so just continue to be extremely authentic and very knowledgeable about the community that you're serving. How can you best advocate for the community if you don't know how to advocate for yourself? So be confident.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I would go back to being your authentic, true self and really holding closely any morals and values that you do have in everything you do across your career, with your family, and just continuing to be consistent in that. Being your authentic self is what sets you apart because no one can be you, so bringing in that element of your uniqueness is key.
