Her Story
About minakshi
I have been in finance since 2007, giving me almost 19 years of experience in the field. I started with a mandatory articleship or internship required for chartered accountancy for three and a half years, which I completed by 2011. After that, I joined Genpact India in 2012-13, where I met my mentor Shakat who changed the perspective of how I worked in my professional life. He taught me to work in a detailed, analytical way, and I even started giving training under him to my subordinates and colleagues. Currently, I work as a tax professional, signing tax returns for individuals, businesses, and corporations across federal and different state jurisdictions. I work with more than 200 clients, each with different portfolios and challenges. I deal directly with clients, advising them on tax savings, income planning, and expense projections. I am already getting into the managerial and leadership side within my firm, teaching my support staff to learn new aspects of taxes. I stay up-to-date with regulation changes through my CPA certification CPE hours, reading IRS news, and researching new areas like R&D tax credits. I recently started posting on LinkedIn based on my experience to educate people about taxes. My work style is not traditional 9 to 5 - sometimes I work in the middle of the night or during weekends when there are deadlines, because when there is work, I want to get things done.

Ten minutes with minakshi
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to the unwavering support of my family throughout my career. Currently, my husband is highly supportive of my work style, which is not a traditional 9 to 5 approach - sometimes I work in the middle of the night or during weekends. He helps during those times by taking care of the kids. I even started working after 5 or 6 weeks of my delivery, and he was very supportive during that time, feeding the kids whenever needed and helping me during weekends. I'm more of a workaholic, and when there is a deadline and work to be done, I want to get things done - there is no other option. Sometimes my mind is just working around my work, and when I'm down or stressed out, he's the only one who can calm me down. Before my wedding, it was always my parents who supported me. They never stopped me from doing anything out of the box. I used to work odd hours because I was working for Australian and American clients from India, so I had to be available during their time zones, sometimes working at 1 or 2 o'clock in the night from the office. They helped me with transportation and everything, giving me the freedom to work without stopping me. I much appreciate them for that support.
02What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The most important value to me is living in the present. This is the core principle of Sahaja Yoga that I follow - whatever is done in the past is done, we cannot change it, and whatever is coming in the future, we don't know anything about it. The only thing that you can beautify is your presence. I try to meditate every day, though sometimes it's not possible because of the kids and other responsibilities, but I try to stay up-to-date with meditation. In my professional life, I believe strongly in educating clients rather than just giving them final numbers. My personal thought is that if you're working with a client, instead of just giving them a final number, you should train them how to read these numbers. I also believe in the importance of recognition and branding for women. Even though we say we are very open-minded and advanced, I still feel there are places where women are not being appreciated enough. I've had clients who don't want to work with me because they don't want to work with women, or they have some kind of barrier. Recognition gives women confidence and motivation to work harder, and branding is important for women to grow further and have visibility.
