Her Story

About Nakia

I work for H&R Block as a District General Manager in Las Vegas, and I also oversee offices in Cedar City, Utah. In my role, I lead a group of area managers in the tax business, making sure we're able to meet our targets for the day and help clients find confidence when they are making financial decisions that ultimately lead to their end-of-year tax return. We're not only doing tax work - we're building confidence within our communities through volunteer work, and we help clients with bookkeeping and payroll. I'm really managing from a high level and influencing my leaders to understand the why behind the performance. Prior to H&R Block, I worked for Public Storage here in Las Vegas as a district manager. Before that, I worked for H&R Block as a Senior Director of Operations, where I managed locations in the casino and off the casino - very high-end retail business. I started out in college as a manager trainee in California and worked my way up to that senior leadership position. My main area of expertise is leadership development and coaching - that's my superpower. I consider myself as someone who leads through influence and not authority, and I really love to help people see their potential. What I'm most proud of professionally is really just developing and elevating leaders, watching people that I've mentored confidently step into bigger roles and thrive in their own careers. Building high-performing, people-focused leaders is something I'm super proud of - to say that I've had my hand or had some influence on someone that I've challenged to grow and really elevate the culture that they're within and drive performance, and then to see them step out into their elevated role and they're doing just that.

Ten minutes with Nakia

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to consistency and discipline. I have belief in myself, and when it comes to consistency and discipline, talent matters, but having the discipline to show up every day with intention is what creates momentum and long-term success.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would tell a young woman entering my industry to surround yourself with people who challenge and champion you. You're able to grow around people who speak your name in rooms that you're not in, and push you to rise higher and stretch you to your full potential.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity is number one for me - just believe in what you're doing, even when no one is watching, and it also builds trust. Another value that's most important to me is being authentic. You lead with integrity and authenticity, really, because real connections come from showing your true self.
