Her Story

About Patricia

I started my career in technology and gradually moved into business and leadership. I got my doctorate in transformational leadership because I always wondered what makes a leader who starts off on the right path take a left turn. I wanted to identify what we can look for, hire for, and train for. Through my research during COVID, I was able to identify transformational leadership as an evergreen leadership style that doesn't require switching based on different situations. My research also revealed that women are naturally transformational leaders from an emotional intelligence standpoint. Today, I wear several hats. I've published three books on transformation and speak to leaders, train leaders, and do workshops. My day-to-day job is in digital transformation in the higher education technology space, where institutions are making investments to move from legacy software to cloud-based, AI-powered systems. I lead the people side and the change side, helping individuals adopt the change, evangelize it, and become comfortable with new tools. I've developed two methodologies: the Reframe Method and the TOP Model for digital transformation. I'm most proud of helping people see things differently, especially understanding that change and transformation are different. Change is binary and subject to reversal, like going to the gym at the beginning of the year and then stopping. Transformation is incremental, foundationally solid, iterative, and never stops. This distinction has really shifted how people think about getting from point A to point B.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I think when you're just starting out, there's room to grow, and this is totally normal, what you're going through - the missteps, the second-guessing, all that. I don't think you should think that it's a clear path and you're gonna know everything and do everything right. Take that off the table so you can be your authentic self, because there are so many strengths in the female energy that a lot of women fail to tap into. Just tap into that instead of trying to act like a guy or present like a guy in leadership. Allow yourself the room to make mistakes and fail forward fast. Don't beat yourself up if you're not getting it right, because few of us get it right the first time. What's in store for you is really, really great, so just stay the course. Learn from your mistakes and then take others along the way. Once you get to a certain point, mentor other women. Stay the course, and you don't have to have it all figured out. Some people do, but I didn't. I graduated from high school at 16, and I didn't even want to go to college at first. My path wasn't clear, but I just knew I had to keep moving forward, and that's what got me to where I am today.
