Her Story

About Rishika

I'm in my last semester as a chemical engineering student, and I've been in leadership positions throughout my undergraduate life. Currently, I serve as the AS controller, or CFO, for Associated Students, the student government entity at my university. I've held this position for the last year. Before being elected as the controller for the student body, I served as the director of sustainability affairs on the student board. My typical day starts in the morning with meetings for my on-campus leadership positions. Once my meetings are done, I head over to my classes, which usually wrap up around 5 to 6 p.m., though some classes last until 7:30. After classes, I get done with my assignments and any projects, meeting with my project groups since I'm a senior. I also catch up on additional work for my leadership positions, hang out with my friends, and play some games before the day ends. My most notable achievement so far has been landing an internship at Slack National Laboratory at Stanford. I'm a student member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, both at our university's student chapter and in the overall organization. I previously worked as the treasurer for the student club for that organization on campus. Outside of school and work, I love to cook and invite my friends over to make meals for them. I like to experiment with flavors. I also like to paint in my free time.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would like to say to my parents, because I'm an international student, and I'm an only child, but they have always supported all my dreams and aspirations I have had so far in my life of 22 years. I would also like to attribute that to all my friends who have supported me in my journey throughout.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice would be just don't be afraid of taking on a challenge. It may just feel like you're really lost at times, but just keep on trying, because especially in our field of chemical engineering, and I want to get into research in the future, so my mentor at Slack told me that 99% of the times in research is failure, so don't be afraid of that, and be comfortable with it, so that you can learn where you messed up, and you can keep on changing your approach to things.
