Her Story

About Sally

I graduated with an undergrad degree in studio art and had internships at galleries, which led to my first jobs in administrative roles at art museums in Omaha. I thought I was going to go the administrative route, so I got a master's in public administration in 2008. But the fundraising kind of wore me out, so I decided to go into journalism. I got a column in the paper writing about art, and I loved it. I started a blog and got back into making my own art when my kids were born, working mostly in drawing and painting, some collage and mixed media. Then I got my second master's in art history in 2016 and became a curator at WVU, while also continuing to make work and publish writing. For my day job, my greatest accomplishment has been developing an artist in residency program, the first one ever at WVU, that's been successful. Personally, it's participating in all the international artist residencies that I have and the public art that I have out there as well. I'm a member of the Southeast College Art Association and the West Virginia Association of Museums. I present at arts and art history conferences, do guest lectures for different classes, and sometimes do artist talks when I exhibit.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Sally

01What do you attribute your success to?

Hard work, ambition, and a strong passion for the arts.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

You do You. -Wanda Ewing

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

You have to really have a passion for the arts, I mean, truly, and then you have to be really scrappy and entrepreneurial, and ambitious. It's very competitive, and sadly, nobody gets paid that much in the arts, so it's this weird, ironic thing that it's super competitive, but you still don't get paid well. That's the biggest challenge, definitely, especially for women in this field. We have tons of women in the arts, but we're still not the majority, or close to the CEOs, the directors, getting all of the high-profile exhibitions and collections.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Women are still underpaid and underrepresented in the arts.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Authenticity, individuality, playfulness, and drive.
