Her Story
About Shalita
Mrs. Shalita Thrasher is a breast cancer survivor, certified life coach, and the founder and CEO of Shine Through Me Incorporated, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to breast cancer advocacy, education, and survivor support. Known for her larger-than-life personality and unwavering sense of purpose, she is deeply committed to empowering individuals affected by cancer to become their own advocates and prioritize early detection through self-examinations. Her personal journey of faith, resilience, and healing has become the foundation of her life’s mission to serve others.
In 2021, while undergoing chemotherapy for stage 2 triple-negative breast cancer diagnosed during the COVID-19 pandemic, Mrs. Thrasher founded Shine Through Me Incorporated after what she describes as a calling from God to turn her pain into purpose. Despite facing an aggressive diagnosis, intensive treatment, and even contracting COVID-19 during her battle, she remained steadfast in her faith and determination. Today, she leads the organization year-round, providing scholarships, resources, and direct support to patients and families, while hosting signature events such as the Pink Wonderland Gala, the Pink Cancer Walk, and annual toy giveaways for children impacted by cancer.
Through her leadership and advocacy, Mrs. Thrasher has become a recognized voice in the cancer survivorship and nonprofit community, speaking at schools, city halls, and the Georgia State Capitol to raise awareness about early detection and patient empowerment. She has received numerous honors, including recognition as a Fabulous Woman of Fayette County (2024), a resolution from DeKalb County Superior Court Clerk Deborah D. Berry, a proclamation from the Georgia Secretary of State in 2025, and a nomination for Nonprofit of the Year at the 15th Annual Rice Awards. Guided by faith and compassion, she continues to dedicate her life to educating, uplifting, and supporting others through their cancer journeys.

Ten minutes with Shalita
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute all of my success to my Heavenly Father and my faith. When I discovered that lump in my breast in the shower, God clearly spoke to me and told me what it was. He said, 'This is cancer, but I have something for you to do.' I was obedient. He told me to go to the doctor the next day, and even though it was the heart of COVID and the entire country was shut down, I listened. Obedience is better than sacrifice. God trusted me to do His will and to do His work, and I passed the test. He saved my life, and He turned my pain into purpose and my trial into my testimony. I know that God is real, and He saved me for this reason, so people can see through me what He is capable of doing. My faith never wavers. I praise Him in the airport, at home, in church, at the grocery store, at the gas station - wherever I go, I have my praise and worship with me. I will always give Him all the honor, praise, and glory, no matter what anyone says, because that's where my help comes from.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I have ever received is to never give up and to maintain faith throughout my professional journey.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
First, you have to know who you are as an individual. You must know who you are as an individual. You must always believe in yourself. Never listen to the naysayers. You may not achieve what you want overnight, but if you continue the path, and if you continue to stay truthful and honest to yourself, and know that if you get bad news, nothing stays the same. Keep going. Stay the path, stay encouraged, have a personal relationship with whomever you prayed to, and never give up. And remember, nothing stays the same.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge in my field is the unknown about different diagnoses and what may happen in the outcome. My biggest challenge is when I have an upcoming doctor's appointment - my anxiety kicks in. It's called White Coat Anxiety or White Coat Hypertension. When I see the white coat, I have to overcome it. It's mental now, just making sure that my mental stays intact, and I know that I can overcome the anxiety when I see a white coat. They misdiagnosed me, and then I have to see them all the time, and it's just mental, so I just have to overcome that. The greatest opportunity is that I'm allowed to be able to help so many men and women. I've been on so many different platforms where I can share my testimony and give so many people knowledge and bring awareness. It's always a great opportunity when I'm able to help just one more person, and when I'm on my platform, just saving lives and being able to give back resources.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The most important values to me are loyalty, having a personal relationship with whomever your religious beliefs are and whoever you pray to, being honest, being trustworthy, and being a good person, inside and out.
