Her Story
About Sheri
I was a teacher for 23 years before moving into my current role as a Case Manager, which I've held since October. I quit teaching after I realized I was ready for a change in my life. They literally hired me knowing I had teaching experience, but in a way, I'm also still teaching because I'm teaching my staff, and I'm also printing out and finding educational worksheets for the adults who want to improve their goals of reading, writing, and math. I manage 11 staff who work with adults with disabilities in the community. I plan schedules, substitute if they're out sick, and work directly with clients. I also wear the hat of a counselor to solve problems - when clients are frustrated about something, I help them calm down and learn how to meditate. I didn't know I was going to enjoy it as much as I do. What I love is that every day is different, and even though I like routine, it's fun to help solve problems on a daily basis and help clients recognize they can achieve their goals if they just try hard. I really don't feel stressed with this job, and I'm at a point where I could do this for another 7-10 years.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Sheri
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my husband, who is my best friend. He encourages, motivates, and has educated me to be the best version of myself.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would say just be transparent, responsible, reliable, and communicate often, and ask lots of questions. You can do anything.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The challenge would be the pay. I mean, if you are focused only on pay, then you shouldn't be working for a non-profit. You know, if you love what you do, then you don't feel like you have to make tons of money, but a lot of people have this expectation. There are way more benefits with what I do, like feeling that I am making a difference.
