Her Story

About Tiffany

Tiffany Wood is a dedicated elementary educator with 27 years of experience in teaching, including 23 years in California before relocating to Las Vegas, Nevada, where she continues her work in the Clark County School District. She teaches all core subjects at the elementary level with a strong emphasis on social-emotional learning, recognizing the growing need to help students develop emotional regulation, resilience, and healthy interpersonal skills. Throughout her career, she has remained deeply committed to meeting students where they are academically and emotionally, creating classroom environments that support both learning and personal growth.

A lifelong learner, Tiffany has consistently pursued professional development opportunities to strengthen her instructional practice and avoid stagnation in her teaching. She has written and implemented grants, contributed to curriculum development projects, and engaged in enriching educational experiences such as marine biology training through a week-long program with the Aquarium of Long Beach on Catalina Island and participating in Cotsen Foundation. Cotsen Foundation for the ART of TEACHING is a professional development and mentorship program for educators that focuses on helping strong teachers become exceptional teachers through intensive coaching, collaboration, and ongoing learning opportunities. The foundation’s mission is to “transform good teachers into great teachers.”

Her dedication to excellence earned her a nomination for the Life Changer of the Year Award through National Life Group, which honors educators making a meaningful impact in students’ lives across the country.

Beyond the classroom, Tiffany operates a private tutoring business, which she plans to expand in retirement as she transitions from full-time teaching. She holds a Master’s degree in Education with an emphasis in Curriculum and Instruction from California State University, Long Beach, and has also contributed to youth mentorship and leadership programs. Her personal journey has been shaped by significant loss, including the passing of her mother and brother, which has deepened her perspective on life and reinforced her belief in prioritizing happiness and purpose in one’s work. She remains committed to fostering positivity, perseverance, and joy in both her students and her professional community.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Tiffany

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to hard work and adaptability. Adaptability has been essential throughout my 27 years in education, as I have experienced many evolving trends, instructional shifts, and changing educational practices over the course of my career. Being able to embrace and adjust to those changes has made a significant difference in my effectiveness as an educator. I also strongly believe in avoiding stagnation by continuously pursuing professional development opportunities, which has allowed me to grow both personally and professionally while continuing to strengthen my instructional practice.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I ever received was to keep on doing professional development and don't ever get stagnant in what you're doing. This advice has really shaped my approach to teaching and helped me stay current and engaged throughout my 27-year career. I've taken it to heart by going to as many professional development opportunities as I possibly can, writing grants, and seeking out unique learning experiences.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would encourage young women entering the field of education to remain adaptable, continue learning, and truly love what they do. Education is constantly evolving, and being open to change while continuing to grow professionally will help them stay effective and fulfilled throughout their careers. I would also remind them not to become stagnant, but instead seek out opportunities that challenge and inspire them, whether through professional development, mentorship, leadership opportunities, or new educational experiences.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in education today is that no single curriculum can fully meet the diverse academic, emotional, and social needs of every child. Teachers are working with students who come from a wide range of backgrounds and learning levels, while also addressing increasing social-emotional and behavioral needs in the classroom. As educators, we often have to adapt, supplement, and individualize instruction to ensure all students are supported and successful. In addition, many educators currently feel that the profession is under intense scrutiny and lacks the level of respect and support it deserves, which can make the work especially challenging.

At the same time, education offers a wide variety of opportunities and career paths. Educators can teach different grade levels and subject areas, move into roles such as interventionists, instructional strategists, curriculum specialists, or administrators, or pursue leadership positions within district offices. There are also opportunities outside of the traditional classroom setting, including private tutoring, educational consulting, mentoring, and online instruction. Personally, I plan to continue working in education through my tutoring business after I retire from full-time teaching.

One of the most rewarding aspects of education is that teaching skills are transferable and valued in many places around the world. However, it is also important to acknowledge the current realities of the profession. Many school districts are facing budget challenges, staffing cuts, and layoffs, which has created a difficult job market in some areas. Despite these challenges, education remains a meaningful and impactful profession for those who are passionate about helping students grow and succeed.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Honesty is one of the most important values in both my professional and personal life. I believe it is essential to be honest with others, but also honest with yourself. As an educator, I think teaching honesty and integrity is incredibly important because those qualities help build trust, accountability, and strong relationships both inside and outside the classroom.

Perseverance is another value that has guided me throughout my career and life. Education comes with many challenges and constant changes, and perseverance is what allows educators to continue growing, adapting, and supporting students even during difficult times.

Happiness and purpose are also extremely important to me. I strongly believe that people should do work that genuinely makes them happy. Especially in education, there are many ups and downs, and if you are not passionate about what you are doing, it affects not only you, but also the people around you. Students, colleagues, family members, and loved ones all feel the energy and attitude you bring into your work and daily life. I believe positivity, fulfillment, and emotional well-being have a ripple effect on everyone around us.

After losing both my mother and brother within a short period of time, my perspective on life changed significantly. Experiences that once seemed overwhelming no longer carry the same weight. Those losses taught me the importance of focusing on what truly matters, letting go of unnecessary negativity, and appreciating life, relationships, and meaningful moments more deeply.
