She is currently focused on independent consulting through her studio, JB & Co., LLC, where she builds custom websites and design systems for small businesses and community organizations. Her work is guided by a commitment to accessibility, cross-functional collaboration, and making design decisions that scale effectively across products and teams.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Brittany

01What do you attribute your success to?

I've always been interested in design and have been practicing it non-professionally for a while before I embarked on it as a business, and I would not look back. I've always kind of considered myself a creative person and inventive, and design just kind of fit with my personality. I spent the better part of my 20s figuring that out, realizing that I've been doing design all along in all the different things I've ever done. Finally, in my 30s, I decided to go for it professionally, and the career just kind of fit like a glove. I don't have a very regular, linear path to this career, and I think that actually makes me a stronger UX designer. It gives me a more holistic view of many different things and helps with improving empathy towards people, which is a very important skill when you're doing human-centered design. I have no regrets about the way things happened. I'm actually strengthened by them.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received is to keep persevering and to continue working through challenges, even when progress feels difficult or uncertain.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Trust your instincts. If you are a creative person, even if you don't have the corporate jargon nailed down and maybe that environment doesn't really suit you very well, that's probably a strength. Trust your instincts, be authentic, and stand up for the solutions that you believe in. Do what you love. Work hard, stay disciplined.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenges are ensuring that you are staying on task as there's so many things to do at once in this field. I've noticed with a lot of premium website themes, specifically WordPress themes out there, a lot of them look nice, but they really only function for one purpose, and it's really hard to customize it for your own business and scale it in a way that's going to suit your business's needs. That's why I'm building a very comprehensive design system that can be used by any company regardless of the domain, with a focus on accessibility and scalability.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Discipline and integrity are most important to me. I also value authenticity and trusting my instincts. Being a creative person and standing up for the solutions I believe in are core to how I work.
