Her Story
About Cayla
I went to college at Western Michigan University where I studied public relations and marketing. During that time, I spent a lot of time with my aunt, who is a global marketing strategist, and she would take me to a lot of brand activations that she was a part of, specifically the Essence Fest where she led the Walmart activation. I learned a lot about marketing through her, and that's what sparked my interest initially to study marketing and public relations. After my graduation, I interned at her marketing agency and I was a part of a production shoot, and I think that sparked my interest in particularly advertising and just being a part of that creative execution. I landed my role at Campbell Ewald within 9 months of that internship, and from there, I just fell in love with account management and I kind of knew that was my calling. In my current role, my key responsibilities include client management where I'm in constant communication with the clients, receiving input briefs, talking through those with the clients, ensuring that I have a clear understanding of what their request is. A lot of times it's regurgitating the information that they share and then translating that information to our internal team. That includes internal resourcing, figuring out who from the agency is needed on a particular project, whether it's creative, production, or media, and then pretty much project managing a campaign with timelines, sharing client feedback, translating the creative questions to the client, and just being that liaison between the agency and the client.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Cayla
01What do you attribute your success to?
First, I live in God. I would say my family and my boyfriend. I give a lot of credit to my aunt because she's who introduced me to the field at a very young age. She exposed me to something that I didn't know people genuinely did. So it was just my family, my boyfriend, and God.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would say, don't be afraid to use your voice. If you're in the room, you're there for a reason, so believe in the value that you bring, believe in your voice, and be unapologetically yourself. It'll take you far. So, believe in your voice, be unapologetically yourself, and work hard.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge is that brands are taking their work in-house and moving away from AOR agencies. I think that the challenge is that a lot of people are, quite frankly, out of work or being laid off, and I think it's just the time right now. I feel like it will turn and it will get back to AOR and agency work to come up, but right now, it's just a tough time for people overall, especially with some of the big three moving out of Detroit and going to agencies in New York and LA. So the challenge is that people are just out of work, genuinely, and it's just unfortunate.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Loyalty, transparency, and integrity.
