About Chi’Mur
As Program Manager for Step Up, I facilitate work readiness workshops covering essential topics including interviewing, job searching, professional etiquette, professional grooming, branding, and the most sought-after topic, resume writing. My main area of expertise is community engagement, where I focus on building and cultivating relationships with local businesses, the Raleigh Chamber, NC Works, and other partners that support and align with our goals. I'm kind of the front person - when I'm not facilitating workshops, I'm out sitting down across the desk from decision makers, explaining to them what our program is about and how they can partner with us to offer more services to the participants. I'm passionate about collaborating with local employers and other community-based organizations to provide a robust service for our participants, including direct referrals to employers, getting local colleges on board to offer paid internships, mentorship opportunities, and possibilities to work for some of those local entities. One of my biggest goals is to establish referral pipelines with organizations we haven't collaborated with yet, particularly around re-entry services, so we can help individuals who are coming home and want a second chance at life by partnering to provide second chance jobs and housing.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Always make career decisions based on how well a position aligns with your personal and professional goals, and not salary. Don't follow the money, because sometimes that's all you end up with, and then nothing else is enriching your life or your community.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would say don't be afraid to try something you've never done. Go to places you've never been. And your only enemy is your own fear.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest opportunities right now are collaborating with local employers and other community-based organizations to provide a robust service for our participants, including direct referrals to employers, getting local colleges on board to offer paid internships, mentorship opportunities, and possibilities to work for some of those local entities. The biggest challenge would be to establish a referral pipeline with some of the organizations that we haven't collaborated with yet. For example, there are a lot of organizations that work around re-entry services, and it would be great if we could partner with the re-entry service so that when individuals are 30 to 60 days out from returning home, we could be a part of that individual getting that second chance job, getting the second chance housing, and kind of helping individuals get back on their feet.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Respect is huge. Authenticity is huge. And collaboration.
