Her Story

About Madison

I have been working in the nonprofit sector for about 4 years as a career advisor for veterans. In this role, I work with those who are recently transitioned out of the military, or are still active duty getting ready to transition, or have transitioned a while ago. I help them with everything in relation to the job search - anything as far as resume writing and interviewing and things of that sort - just kind of helping get them prepared to enter into the civilian world. For the past 2 years in my nonprofit career, I have been an impact performer for the organization, and I've had over 800 of my clients find positions after getting our assistance. Before my nonprofit work, I served in the military for 12 years, where I did the same kind of work, which definitely helped prepare me for what I do now. I have gotten my degrees in supervision and management and human resources, which has helped a ton as well.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would say I attribute my success just to my family being supportive of me. Even when I was younger, joining the military, and then now being older, my husband and my children are all very supportive of everything I do. That support system has been crucial to everything I've accomplished.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I ever received would be honestly just staying true to yourself. If you're looking for a new career, or even just in the same position that you're in, just making sure that you are being your true self, and having that integrity, and just professionalism with where you're at.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My biggest advice is just be proactive and make sure that you're advocating for yourself. Network with people, and don't wait for someone to recognize you. Just kind of get out there and be proactive in your career.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I would say some of the biggest challenges would be the job market in general right now is tough, so that's something we have to work with with our clients. We're helping them navigate that, and being able to help them not kind of derail themselves, because it is a frustrating experience. It's more of what is a hurdle right now versus something in specific to my position, just something that we have to deal with.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Honesty is one of the most important values to me, for sure. And then integrity, which I guess goes right along with the honesty portion of things. Those would be the main ones that I would say are most important to me in my work and personal life.
