Her Story
About Sunita
I started my journey at school as a computer information systems undergrad major with a minor in management. I thought I was going to be a doctor, so I started with science and have a minor in biology. But early on, I realized that I really enjoyed leading from the forefront and have a very curious mind, very much an engineering mindset, trying to problem solve. While at school, I helped at the Student Service Center, helping people schedule for classes and using the computers in the lab. I then did my master's in computer science, majoring in software engineering. I started out as a developer and then navigated my way into the need for delivering quality software. I saw a niche in pivoting from just a test phase to actually thinking about quality throughout the life cycle and quality in everything that you do. I kind of think about doing the right thing when no one's looking as the definition of quality. That was the beginning, and that brought me here. I've been in my field for over 20 years now.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Sunita
01What do you attribute your success to?
I would say the feedback I receive from team members is my most notable professional achievement. When they later ping me and say, hey, now I get what you mean by self-advocacy and standing up for myself, and telling my own story - I think that is the most rewarding part of what I do. Just allowing people to see their own potential before they even realize it. That's what success means to me.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I'd say the sky's the limit. Be curious. Raise your hand. Make connections. Network. Step out of your comfort zone. Share your thoughts. Be seen as someone navigating this journey.
