Her Story
About Vanessa
I have been working in marketing and communications for about 5 years, with over 10 years of experience in business leadership overall. My expertise is specifically in healthcare marketing, and my degree is in public health. I currently work with a managed care organization. I really support and believe in using marketing for an authentic, engaging, more community-centered focus - really talking to the people, understanding where they're coming from, so that the message really connects with them. My career journey started when I worked as an administrative assistant for a facilities management company. In that role, I redeveloped the special building operations graphics for the van wraps, and for our websites and our way of doing business for forms and presentations. That's where my love of graphic design and making sure that we're tailoring the message to the target audience really developed from. I started working on websites from there, and presentations, and then moved into some photography and newsletter development, and that really brought me to where I am now. Looking ahead, my next career goal is possibly going into more of a marketing consulting role for small businesses, especially in rural communities where it's really important for economic growth. I want to build up those communities that are already there and already have a presence in their areas, and I really want those small businesses to succeed. I feel like sometimes it's very daunting for them to have a passion, but not really know how to reach people so that others believe in their passion, and that's really what I want to do.

Ten minutes with Vanessa
01What do you attribute your success to?
I really lean on my husband. He is my best friend and my biggest supporter, and he will tell me, you know, go and do whatever you need - like, I went for a facial this weekend, or, you know, we need to stay in and play a new board game, like Monopoly Scrabble Hybrid. He has been right there beside me for as long as I can remember. And his family is my family, and I really love talking with my nieces, who are adults. They give me just this boost of energy that it's just irreplaceable. It really takes a village - I need that support system to cheer me on and give me constructive criticism sometimes.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would tell her to believe in herself, in her voice, and not to shrink back in the room because other people might not see her vision or believe in her. Really seek out a mentor that can help you in that area in finding your voice and really leaning into it. You need to know how to advocate for yourself first before you can advocate for marketing and storytelling within marketing. There's going to be challenges no matter where you are in your career - whether you're new to the industry, or you're well-established, or you're looking at retirement. But whether you're looking at those people that you're aspiring to be, or looking at those ones that you don't want to be anything like, you can always lean into those moments and learn from them instead of running away from that discomfort. Ask yourself, what is this teaching me? Get comfortable with being uncomfortable.
