How She Found Opportunity in an Industry Everyone Else Was Leaving

I saw potential in turning my own challenges, living with a disability, overcoming discrimination, and rebuilding my life, into opportunities to serve and empower others. My confidence came from knowing that the obstacles meant to limit me had already taught me how to lead, advocate, and create meaningful change.

I saw an opportunity to redefine how mission-critical training could be delivered in the Department of Defense by proving that engaging, learner-centered eLearning could be just as effective as traditional instruction. My confidence came from trusting the instructional design process and believing that innovation is most impactful when it helps people perform their jobs with greater confidence and readiness.

Everyone else was looking at the market; I was looking at the people inside it, and people are always the opportunity nobody prices in correctly.

I saw an industry full of incredibly talented creatives competing for opportunities instead of creating them. What moved me forward was a conviction that the greatest innovations don't come from comparing yourself to what's been done, they come from imagining what everyone else overlooked.

The opportunities that changed my life weren't the ones everyone was chasing. They were the ones that allowed me to make a difference. Purpose gave me the confidence to take the first step, and impact kept me moving forward.

I've learned to trust my gut, stay consistent, and not let other people's doubts decide what I'm capable of.

I learned from Rick Warren's The Purpose Driven Life that when I approach everything I do with the understanding that life is not about me, but about God, my entire perspective changes. I also learned the importance of pursuing opportunities that align with my passions, character, and purpose. While many opportunities seemed to fall into my lap, I eventually realized that being authentic is the key to fulfilling my God-given purpose.

When I started building my own bookkeeping and tax business, many people believed technology would eventually replace the need for professionals in this industry. I saw the opposite. Software could automate transactions, but it could not explain the numbers, understand the person behind the business, or help an overwhelmed owner decide what to do next. I also saw an increasing number of experienced accounting professionals approaching retirement while fewer people were entering the field. At the same time, small business owners needed more support than ever. They were trying to navigate bookkeeping, payroll, taxes, cash flow, and changing compliance requirements, often without anyone taking the time to explain how everything worked together. That gap gave me the confidence to move forward. I knew there was an opportunity to build something more personal and approachable. I did not want to simply prepare reports or file returns. I wanted to help business owners understand their finances and feel supported instead of judged or overwhelmed. What others viewed as an industry being replaced or left behind, I saw as an industry ready to evolve.

I don't necessarily see impossible opportunities with companies or clients; I more so associate the challenge with my own expectations and growth. I believe your day is never wasted if you have laughed and learned - so don't take life so seriously. Make sure you learn something valuable everyday and success at any avenue will surely follow. Once I discovered my life's purpose...... I quit taking life so somber.

Independent thinking is a competitive advantage. Strategic judgment is knowing when to trust the evidence over consensus.

My confidence came from knowing that sustainable change begins with people. Opportunity is created by seeing potential where others see limitations, inspiring others to believe in a shared vision, and having the courage to pursue excellence despite uncertainty.

People often wait for perfect conditions before taking a chance, but my experience taught me the opposite. As an educator, I learned that the greatest opportunities are often hidden inside the greatest challenges, and I found the confidence to move forward because I had already overcome obstacles that once seemed impossible.

This other career goal, outside of being an author, I was told I was "too short" for. But I know I am capable of doing it, and will put other people's opinions aside to pursue my goals!

I saw a big void in the business insurance industry. Everyone wants to sell car insurance or home insurance or life insurance or health insurance. No one wants to sell business insurance, especially women. I love it and it is the best decision I ever made.

While others saw the wellness industry as a crowded market, I saw a missing hormonal intelligence operating system. Knowing the problem was real is what gave me the confidence to move forward and build the solution myself.

I applied for a highly competitive regional leadership role because I believed in my abilities, my leadership experience, and my capacity to lead with integrity, fairness, and excellence. Despite being told I lacked the credentials, required tenure and would not be selected, I refused to let others' opinions limit what I believed was possible for me. I trusted myself, knowing I could inspire leaders, build a strong team, and help others achieve their goals, and ultimately, I was given the opportunity.

I just had to deal with the severe headaches from Brain Surgery, and offered a big discount to my client to work remote. With my experience and quality of work, it worked out great.

When others saw only impossibility in my return to work after the traumatic loss of my son, I recognized an opportunity to rebuild and help others. Focusing on progress, not pain, gave me the confidence to move forward.

I remember when I was just starting out in business. At a time when everyone was focused on pursuing the most visible opportunities, I noticed a position that no one seemed interested in. Curious about why others avoided it, I took the time to understand the challenges it presented. Rather than seeing obstacles, I saw an opportunity to learn and grow. I asked questions, sought knowledge, and convinced myself that if I was willing to learn it, I could do it. As the computer age was emerging, I embraced the chance to develop new skills and became the go-to computer expert within my company. That experience taught me that success often comes from recognizing potential where others see difficulty and having the confidence to pursue it. I would say to anyone starting out: never tell yourself, "I can't do this" or "this is too difficult." Growth begins when you are willing to step beyond your comfort zone and embrace new challenges. Take a chance on yourself, stay open to learning, and trust in your ability to adapt. You may be surprised not only by what you can accomplish, but by how much you are capable of achieving when you refuse to let doubt define your limits.

The best career moves often begin where others see uncertainty. Moving from financial services into cybersecurity wasn't the obvious path, but I followed the opportunity to use data and AI to solve meaningful problems. I've learned that when you choose growth over comfort and curiosity over certainty, you open doors you never imagined.

I began my legal career as a Legal Assistant and Paralegal after earning my degree in Paralegal Studies. When I was offered a position as a Conflicts Analyst, I initially felt apprehensive because I had no prior experience in conflicts and was unfamiliar with the responsibilities or growth opportunities the role could provide. After carefully considering the opportunity, I recognized that conflicts is a specialized and niche area within the legal industry, particularly valued by large and prestigious law firms. The prospect of expanding my legal knowledge, challenging myself beyond my comfort zone, and gaining exposure to multiple practice areas ultimately motivated me to accept the position. What appealed to me most was the opportunity to work closely with attorneys across the firm and play a critical role in maintaining ethical and professional standards. The position offered a unique perspective into the legal field and allowed me to contribute meaningfully to the firm's operations. Today, I am grateful for that decision. The experience has allowed me to grow significantly both professionally and personally. It has broadened my understanding of diverse areas of law, strengthened my analytical skills, and provided continuous learning opportunities. As the legal industry continues to evolve, I remain committed to expanding my knowledge and developing my career within the industry.
